چکیده

In recent years analysts have examined the effects of bargaining power over household economic decisions on individual well-being. Much of this work has focused on the determinants and consequences of women’s bargaining power. We build on this line of research by classifying households into three types of power structure based on whether the mother, the father, or both jointly decide on food purchases and preparation, and by estimating the association of each household power type on children’s nutritional status in a highly autarkic society of foragers and horticulturalists, the Tsimane’ of the Bolivian Amazon. Biases from self-perceived measures of parental bargaining power are overcome in two ways. First, we match the responses of the two parents to questions about who makes decisions related to food purchases and preparation. Second, we use parental attributes characterizing own well-being as instrumental variables for bargaining power. Using data from a survey done in 2004, we regress the body-mass index (BMI; kg/m) of 569 children

Gender targeting of unconditional income transfers and child nutritional status: Experimental evidence from the Bolivian Amazon

Observational studies suggest that women’s income benefits children’s health and nutritional status, as well as education, more than men’s income, apparently because women are more likely to shift marginal resources to their children. These studies have influenced policies such as conditional cash transfers, which typically target women. However, previous studies have been unable to control for...

Inequality in social rank and adult nutritional status: evidence from a small-scale society in the Bolivian Amazon.

Human capital, wealth, and nutrition in the Bolivian Amazon.

We analyze anthropometric variables of a society of forager-horticulturalists in the Bolivian Amazon (Tsimane') in 2001-2002. Community variables (e.g., inequality, social capital) explain little of the variance in anthropometric indices of nutritional status, but individual-level variables (schooling, wealth) are positively correlated with nutritional status. Dietary quality (foods high in ani...

Does Scale of Public Hospitals Affect Bargaining Power? Evidence From Japan

Background Many of public hospitals in Japan have had a deficit for a long time. Japanese local governments have been encouraging public hospitals to use group purchasing of drugs to benefit from the economies of scale, and increase their bargaining power for obtaining discounts in drug purchasing, thus improving their financial situation. In this study, we empirically investigate whether or no...
